Lost Zone

(Redirected from Lost Zones)

A Lost Zone is a region of the world consumed by the Gloom, and is thusly formed of and inside it.[1] Because the Gloom is an ever-shifting maelstrom of Shadow and Chaos, Lost Zones are inherently chaotic in nature, and change every time one enters them. Wayfinders can enter Lost Zones using a Gloom Dagger, and infusing the dagger with different Imbuements can change the nature of the Lost Zone they end up in.[2][3] The Lost Zones act as pockets to an area that doesn't necessarily exist in real time or space, and can be thought of like an Echo of a place that was once consumed by the Gloom.[2] Only Wayfinders can safely and reliably breach a Lost Zone, as they are composed of the Gloom themselves and can thus influence the Gloom. Non-Wayfinders may attempt to brave a Lost Zone, but it is considerably riskier. As a Wayfinder, to safely enter a Lost Zone requires three things: a Gloom Dagger, locating the actual breach to the Lost Zone itself, and a "connection" to that Lost Zone; the connection can be physical in nature, like an object or momento, or it can be less tangential as a memory or experience or some other ethereal yet real sensation. A non-Wayfinder may also attempt to enter a Lost Zone through a breach with a connection.

Lost Zones are necessary for Wayfinders to venture into in order to gather resources, accomplish objectives, and experience story beats. There are two primary activites available in a Lost Zone: Expeditions - procedurally generated dungeons, and Hunts - boss encounters. Expeditions consist of hand-crafted rooms strung together randomly to create a pattern. Each journey into the Lost Zone presents a unique set of random variables, events, and loot, so no two expeditions are the same.[2] As you explore the expedition and complete any manner of activity, such as opening chests, fighting enemies, grabbing collectibles, or completing challenges, you gather Arclight, which influences rewards received at the end of the expedition. Completing an expedition requires destroying the Gloom Anchor at the end, destabilizing the Gloom and allowing you to harvest the Arclight. A Hunt, meanwhile, requires the crafting of a Gloomtrace, which allows a Wayfinder to intensely focus the Gloom on a singular point to hone in on these powerful individuals and challenge them.
