The First Scribe is the scholarly leader of the monastic Order of the Silver Codex and master of the Aurelian monastery in the Westreach at the time when it was consumed by the Gloom. Originally intended to catalogue the mysteries of the Celestial Architects, a dialogue with the Mother of Shadows led the First Scribe and most of her order to delve into the profane mysteries of the Precursors and the Gloom decades ago. This drew the ire of the devout imperial Archons, who - led by Commander Creed - accused the order of heresy in an inquisition and ultimately marched on the monastery to purge the order. The monk brotherhood, including the First's inner circle known as the Argent Hand, fought valiantly to defend Aurelian and its secrets, but the Archons were relentless and pushed into the furthest depths of the complex, even breaching the Repository of Knowledge, the heart of Aurelian and the First's sanctum. The conflict ended when the First Scribe, in a final act of defiance, triggered a relic known as the Conflux Arc and plunged the monastery - and all inside it, herself included - into the Gloom. Everyone besides herself was killed and turned into remnants: unconscious pseudo-Echo replicas of themselves endlessly reenacting their final moments before the Gloom swallowed Aurelian.

Three decades later, the First Scribe remains trapped in the Gloom, plotting her escape in a plan that involves her Echo Omen, the Wayfinder, and their Gloom Dagger.
