Ghost in the Machine is a side story quest in Wayfinder.
Description[edit]
Start
The Engineer believes someone from the lost civilization known as the Kingdom of Ashes may actually reside within the rings. Find an Amplification Stone to bind all these artifacts together.
Active
The Engineer has discovered the existence of an actual person from the civilization known as the Kingdom of Ashes that resides in the rings you've found. Now he requires an Amplifcation Stone to bring the essence of that person back into existence. A clue about its location is in a parchment in your inventory.
Clear
The Engineer has combined the rings and an amplification stone to recreate the conciousness of Reigel, a citizen from a long dead civilization. A discovery for the ages. Though, it appears, somehow, this once ancient and powerful Kingdom may have fallen to a dark calamity as well.

Dialogue[edit]
Throughout my investigation I noted a peculiar heat in the air. The source of which, I've determined, being the ring itself.
Likewise, since you first divested this ring unto me, I could not help but feel eyes upon me. As if I was being watched by someone or something unseen.
The last ring seemed to thrum. Like a heartbeat.
Unsurprising. I can feel it now that you have brought the scattered rings together. There is a vigor hidden within them yet slumbering, and it yearns to wake. Have you any clue as to why?
I haven't the faintest.
I wouldn't expect so. The truth, you will come to see, is quite the impossible wonder.
My experiments with this ring have led me to believe the Kingdom of Ashes sought to preserve its distinguished citizens by binding their essence to arcane objects.
Exhilarating! Can you even imagine the process? To transfer one's very being into a vessel such as this. What else would they have been capable of? What wonders would—
We're getting off track.
Ah, you're right, of course. Then I shall digress…
I believe these rings are each part of a single citizen's vessel. A personage snatched from the jaws of death and carried unwittingly through the annals of time, long past their homeland's undoing.
Our forlorn friend within the rings, however, is currently in a deep slumber. Fortunately, I have a solution. The Kingdom often dabbled with a mechanism referred to as an Amplification Stone.
I believe with one of these Amplification Stones I might be capable of rebinding these rings, finally giving voice to whomever has been trapped all these years.
I have little guidance to bestow in this last leg of our search. But, if it's of some assistance, take this parchment. It comes from a personal codex of mine on the Kingdom of Ashes.
I dolefully apologize I cannot provide you with more. Luckily for our entrapped friend, you are most resourceful, no?
I know a thing or two.
Go then. Oh, and when you return, do be sure to dress your best. If all goes well, we will be entertaining a revered guest. Best we make a fine impression, don't you think?
You return. Have I told you about the rumors that have spread? All about yourself, of course. The Seekers, if the tales are to be believed, have made exemplary use of you.
I do not hear as many whispers as, perhaps, Kestrel, hidden away in my workshop here. Still, it is clear your tale spreads among Skylight's people.
In any case, how fares your search for the Amplification Stone? Do not fret if there is no news. I understand if you have had little time to devote to such an endeavor.
Actually, I found the Stone.
Wayfinder... Surely, you jest. The Amplification Stone was little more than a myth buried in scattered old tomes. The possibility of successfully finding a Stone in working condition...
Here, take a look.
I can scarcely believe it… I shall prepare the materials we need at once.
It shall only take me a moment. In the meantime, I implore you to watch and to rest. You have already done more than enough. This final stretch shall be my burden to bear.
A flurry of embers rises from the Engineer's forge. They flitter about the room like fireflies, illuminating arcane tools in shades of amethyst.
Mechanical instrumentation hums to life. It sings a song of waking, and Stone in hand, the Engineer binds the rings. The etchings upon them bloom with golden light.
There—that should suffice. Hello? Can you hear me? If anyone still dwells within, please, make yourself known.
Nyra... is that you? It is so dark. I cannot see a thing. Where are you?
My deepest apologies, friend, I am not who you seek. They call me The Engineer. Tell me… how do you feel?
Feel…? Darkness encompasses me. Your voice booms like arcborn thunder. Something… Something must have gone wrong.
Please, where is my daughter, Nyra? Does the Arc Engine still hold? Has it stabilized the Chaos?
The Chaos... Intriguing. No, sir, I am sorry. Your daughter isn't here. I promise I shall speak softly. We have… much to discuss.
The Engineer coaxes the voice within the rings delicately with the intimation of a new age and the passing of the old. While they speak for a time, ultimately, the rings fall silent.
Thank you for your patience. It was not an easy task explaining our friend's current predicament.
His name, he claims, is Reigel Candalor. He was indeed a citizen from a civilization long past. Unfortunately, his memories are plagued by a deep fog.
Does he remember anything?
Little. Which means identifying his origins will prove a difficult task. It appears he was under the impression his stasis in the rings was to be much more temporary than circumstances have ordained.
Stasis?
Yes. His daughter's idea, I have surmised. It appears his homeland was also plagued by a dark catastrophe. In their final hours, many citizens sought to preserve themselves via arcane means.
A catastrophe. The Gloom?
No, not exactly. Though based on what he has described... its effects were not dissimilar.
That's... concerning.
Agreed. Wherever Reigel is from, it was assuredly a more advanced civilization than ours. If they fell to a similar threat… Well, I have much to ask Reigel. For the sake of Skylight, if nothing else.
What about you?
Me? I'm not sure what you mean.
You thought the Kingdom might be your homeland.
I... It appears Reigel was not familiar with a construct such as myself either. That is... all I will say on the matter.
I'm sorry.
Do not be. The information we uncovered today may prove vital. Reigel believes many others from his home may yet be scattered as he was. Perhaps they will know what he does not.
My preliminary discussions with him have already proved fruitful, in fact. I've laid out plans for new relics to be constructed. I dearly hope they will be of use to you.
Until next time, Wayfinder. Be well.
