Dialogue[edit]
Wayfinder, I've been thinking about Raina and whether I'm ready to know the truth or not.
Raina has been my light. Trusting I'd find her again carried me through the darkest moments of the Fall. I just had to think of seeing her again, and I could push through pain.
Graymourn said that Raina is in Skylight, but wouldn't say if she's alive or dead. If I went there and found her grave—after all this—I don't think I could go on.
But, maybe, just maybe she's been clinging to the hope of finding me as well. I can't just ignore this. But I also can't leave my post, not with the threat of the Reavers.
I can go to Skylight.
I would be in your debt, truly. If you do... Speak with Foreman Ruby. From what I understand, she's leading the efforts to rebuild Skylight and managing housing for the refugees.
I can't thank you enough, Wayfinder. I just pray that you return with good news.
Hey, Wayfinder! What can I do for you?
I'm searching for a Deepwood refugee.
Yeah, I can help you with that! It was hard finding beds for so many people at once, but we've been reclaiming buildings lost during the Fall. Who are you looking for?
Her name is Raina.
I don't remember a Raina, but I can check the record as soon as I have a moment. I'm dealing with a real mess right now.
The Shrikes stole a shipment of Cragged Spectra, and if I can't scrounge some by the end of the day it's going to be a problem. These Holt refugees, we've got some sleeping eight to a room.
If I got you Cragged Spectra, could you help me?
Sure, but it's not that simple. Even if she's in the records, she might not be where she's supposed to be. And the spectra's not my only problem.
That's fair. I can start with the Spectra, though.
That would be a big help, to be sure. If you can find what I need, report back, and we'll see how things stand.
You're a lifesaver, Wayfinder! I'm still bound up, but I had a thought. I've got things that need delivering to the Holt refugees. If you take them where they need to go, you can ask about your girl.
What sort of things?
Medicine, a few little sundries. We're all struggling, but seems like those from the Holt had been living a nightmare... I've been trying to scrounge up things that can make them feel welcome.
There weren't that many people in Deepwood at the end. Odds are good that someone knows this Raina; you might find her before I'm done with my shift.
Here's the supplies. Let me know when you're done.
Someone said they'd bring me my medicine. Is that it?
Yes, I'm delivering supplies from Ruby.
Thank you... thank you. It's my leg. Survived for so long. So long. Then, two nights before you came... barbed arrow. Poisoned. Lucky to still have the leg at all.
The voices in the woods got really loud. In the beginning, the Reavers were abducting people every night. The screams were unbearable.
I told myself it'd be all right if I just made it to Skylight. Then I said it'd be all right if I found out what happened to Laren, my sister-in-law. Now... I'm not all right.
I found out where Laren went. The Reavers left the ones they caught in pieces, so anyone trying to identify the bodies would have to take an hour reassembling them.
That's terrible. Do you know Raina?
Raina? Olaf's daughter? Oh yes. I remember her as a child. Always climbing, she was. Built a house out in the woods with that nice boy, Russ? Reavers took him early on.
Rust is safe. But is Raina alive?
She was. Last week. Keeping sheltered, keeping safe. We all were. But she's alive, yes. With Wilhelm, I think. I haven't seen her here. But I think I saw her, yes, on that last day.
Wayfinder! You made it. Any luck?
I've got to meet with Lord Halar about the Arclight systems. After that I may be able to check the records. But if you've got the time, I could use a bit more help with the refugees.
We're trying to place the Deepwood folk—get them trained and setting them to work. If you could speak with some of the recruits, see if there's any trouble—see if they know your girl?
Sure, I can do that.
Either way, come back to me when you're done and we'll get this sorted.
Hello, hello! If you're here from Ruby, please let her know that I'm ready to start as soon as possible.
I'm quite excited! I'm a chronicler by trade. I was in Deepwood Holt pursuing a lead on ancient Riverden relics when the Gloom fell. You can't imagine the horrors of the last year.
I ran out of ink two weeks in. And paper? You won't believe the things I found to write on. The Archives here, oh, I've dreamt of that smell of paper. I can't wait to get to work!
Do you know Raina?
Raina? No, I'm afraid not. The people of Deepwood, they weren't especially glad to have me about. 'Waste of good water,' some said. No one appreciates a scholar.
But I do have many notes. I can't wait to work with your Corbin, to share my account of this terrible year. You let Ruby know that!
That's all the workers. Time to head back to Ruby.
Back so soon! Did you find your girl?
I'm afraid not. Here's my notes.
You're a good one, Wayfinder. There's hard days ahead for the Holt folk, but we're doing what we can. Now, I've pulled the logs... what was the name again?
Raina. Someone said... Olaf's daughter?
Raina... Raina... Ah! Yes, she's here and safe. Got her settled in quickly since she's full term. Patches says they're lucky they made it here in time.
What do you mean?
I mean the child's coming any day now, Wayfinder... you do know how these things work, right? We got Raina and her husband settled in a room on the ground, no stairs to deal with.
Raina... has a husband?
Yes... Wilhelm? Says here he's a carpenter, that they married after the fall. Kind of romantic, isn't it, finding love when you're surrounded by terrors? It's been too long since we've had a wedding.
We got them settled in near Damon's Bell. I think it's the first house after the lift from Market Street. I've got to get back to it, but thanks again for all your help, Wayfinder.
Oof, I hope you'll excuse me moving slow. Everything just aches. Not long now, though! Can I help you with something?
Are you Raina, from Deepwood Holt?
Indeed I am, though glad to be Raina of Skylight now. The horrors we've seen... I thought my world had ended, but now it's a new beginning. We're thinking Russ if it's a boy, or Zaira if it's a girl.
Why do you ask? I don't remember seeing you in the Holt.
Just checking in with survivors. For Ruby.
Oh, that's wonderful. Wilhelm and I cannot thank all of you enough. Foreman Ruby was so kind to us, and everyone near the Bell has just been simply wonderful.
I'm glad to hear it. I'll... leave you be.
Very well, then. Thank you for checking on us!
Wayfinder... do you have news for me? Is Raina alive?
I have news, yes.
Is it good news?
Raina... probably thought you were dead.
What do you mean?
She's alive but married and pregnant.
...
I'm sorry, Rust.
No... I... I'm so thankful she is alive. And... I mean... I don't know if she's happy. Could you tell if she... never mind.
Could you not look at me like that? Just leave. I have to be alone now.
